Like Unto the Devil

Going along with yesterday’s post, in 2 Ne 9:9 Jacob seems to continue?¢‚Ǩ‚Äùat least in part?¢‚Ǩ‚Äùthe thought of us becoming subject to Satan in the absence of a resurrection.

And our spirits must have become like unto him, and we become devils, angels to a devil, to be shut out from the presence of our God, and to remain with the father of lies, in misery, like unto himself…

When he says we would become like the devil, does Jacob mean in the sense that we will not have a body, or does he mean an actually change comes over us so we become like Satan?

Jacob says we would become devils. This causes me to ponder what exactly a devil is. It would seem to me that a propensity of evil does not a devil make if we would become devil. We would be without physical bodies, so that may be a characteristic of a devil. as well, according to Jacob, we would be miserable, so misery could also be a characteristic of being a devil. Beyond being spirits and miserable, in what other ways are we similar to th devil? Does being miserable beget being evil?

  1. Good question. I think true misery is fully self-absorbed, and selfishness is the key to being devilish. Satan is all about him – his power, his glory, his angish, his loss, the divine “injustice” to him, etc., and with such perfect self-absorption, there is misery that seeks to crush all others with equal misery. Happiness in others is the ultimate wrong that must be suppressed. Others can be tortured with glee in this mindset. And i think I see such expressions among the living.

You must needs incorporate Trackback into your blog, for The Practical Mormon has somewhat to say concerning these things.
