Oh, Man!

Exodus 20:7

Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain

Moses 7:35

Behold, I am God; Man of Holiness is my name; Man of Counsel is my name; and Endless and Eternal is my name, also.

  1. If you were exclaiming, “Oh, Man of Holiness!” or “Oh, Man of Counsel!” then I’d have a problem. By saying, “Oh, man!” it seems to me you’re identifying a different subject.

  2. My understanding was it’s only ‘in vain’ if He’s not going to help me.

This, I take it, is wrong.

    ;)

  3. that’s it!!! I am now officially taping my mouth shut with Tuct Tape.. I guess that means Holy Crap is out too????

  4. If one wanted to take the whole son/man concept even further, one could claim “Oh, brother!” and “Oh, boy!” fall under this commandment as well.

  5. So are you saying “Oh, man!” is a minced oath? Is there historical support?

  6. I have read that saying “Oh, man” is actually calling on all of mankind as a witness to what you are referring to and not an appeal to God.
