What do you do with your spare time?

I find that since we up and moved to Calgary, I have less and less spare time. A typical day for me begins at 4:15. I’m catching the C-Train by 4:40 and get to work at 5:15. I usually leave between 3:30 and 4:00 and get home between 4:15 and 4:45.

Sunday’s are a real day of rest. Other than my time at church, I’m usually sleeping or watching America’s Funniest Home Videos with the Kids (although that is harder now that Battlestar Galactica is on at the same time. Thank goodness for the PVR). Saturdays and a little bit of time during the evenings are my only free time.

There are many things I’d like to do with my spare time but it’s hard to pick. On Saturday’s, my girls have Snowboarding lessons at Sunshine, so we’ll be doing that until mid March. The time we get to spend together doing that is priceless. During the week I have a couple of TV shows I like to watch (Prison Break, Heroes, Lost, The Apprentice, Survivor, Smallville, and Battlestar). Most of those usually end up on the PVR and I watch what I can on Saturday nights. I’ll take my wife on a date once or twice a month. I’d love to veg out in front of the Nintendo, but time just doesn’t seem to allow it. I might put in an hour or so of Flight Simulator, Age of Empires, or StarWars Empire at War. My Son likes playing those with me so that’s usually a fun time with him. Thursday nights are music night where I get together with an old friend and jam for a couple of hours (Rick, Dar – it would be sweet for all of us to get together like in the old days and have some musical fun). Summers are spend on the Shuswap lake wakeboarding and other water sports.

You must have some free time. What do you like to do?

  1. Hey, you rock! That would be an absolute blast to be able to get together with the “old band”.

Let’s see, spare time, what is that?

In my spare time, I do pretty much what I do in my not spare time…Volunteer on every board in Magrath! Just because you aren’t working and your kids are in school, people assume that you aren’t doing anything, so they ask you to do everything. I am also to blame though, I haven’t quite figured out the word “NO” yet. However, with both kids in JR. High next year, that will take care of all the Elementary Committees, which take up ALOT of my time.

However, I try to squeeze in a wee bit of ME TIME. Usually listening to music, doing yoga, checking my email and other various favorite websites, (although I have to do it as I’m typing up minutes or agendas) and taping favorite shows to watch at a more convenient time.. after midnight..which is when it is usually me time, and laundry time.

We do get to go on the occasional date, but only because our kids are old enough to be left alone.

We enjoy going to eat, going to the Tounge & Groove to listen to live bands, and the odd movie.

I would love to have more spare time, although I don’t have to get up in the middle of the night to catch the c-train. You are probably getting up as I am going to bed!!

  2. I consider my spare time to be any time not at work or doing church stuff.

In those cases, I watch TV or films. I edit on Wikipedia. I take photographs. I blog. I read. I spend time with my family.

  3. If I had to get up at 4:15 I’d kill myself.
    I really, really would.

I’m up for anything musical JM; we should really do the phone call thing.

  4. Spending time with my grandkids is the top of my list of things to do. I chat online with friends and family members that are out of town. I do scrapbooking and right now am sorting through literally boxes of old photos trying to put some order in them.

I too have some favorite shows on tv that I watch. I really love to read.. if it has 2 covers with pages in between my nose is usually pressed in it.

  5. I occasionally like to squander my time by responding to ‘blogs…but usually I can find better things to do. :)
