The church began to fail in its progress

In Alma chapter 4, Mormon discusses how after a war with the Lamanites devastated the Nephites, the church grew by over 3500 converts. Mormon then describes how the following year was fraught with members of the church becoming prideful and contentious. In verse 10, we read:

And thus ended the eighth year of the reign of the judges; and the wickedness of the church was a great stumbling-block to those who did not belong to the church; and thus the church began to fail in its progress.

I wonder what Mormon meant by “progress”. How do we as Mormons measure progress in today’s church, and is there anything that hinders that progress today?
