Being supportive to and an ally of non-binary people requires more than using their proper name (rather than the name you’re used to using). That’s actually the easiest part of it all.
Non-binary people notice when you consistently don’t use their proper pronouns (rather than the pronouns you’re used to using).
Non-binary people notice when you consistently group them into the binary (e.g. my daughters instead of my children).
Non-binary people notice when you say you stand up for queer rights, but you disagree with them when they’re telling you about the issues they face.
Non-binary people notice when you refuse to openly integrate their gender identity into the language you use when discussing them. Even if it actually is unintentional, they notice that you’re doing very little to change your intentions.
