Leaders

What qualities does someone need to make a good business leader? What about a good church leader? Are the qualities the same? Can someone be a good business leader and a poor church leader? Can someone be a good church leader and not a good business leader? Can someone be good at both?

Husbands and Wives HT & VT together

I have to wonder what would happen to the home and visiting teaching programmes if companionships were made up of husbands and wives. Would more home teaching get done? Would more visiting teaching get done? Would more friendships be made?

Inactivity & Leadership

Let’s assume that someone in the Church who goes home teaching each month, pays tithing, attends church each week, completes all assignments, and so forth, will be put into leadership positions. Let’s also assume that someone int he Church who does not do those things will not be put into leadership positions. If these assumptions are correct, is the prospect of leadership positions a valid deterrent for a person’s activity in the Church?

Primary vs Missionary

Before my mission, I was called to teach the CTR B (now CTR 8 ) primary class. It was a great experience. I was able to reaffirm basic gospel principles, learn valuable stories to share in my mission, and observe how baptisms are performed.

In many of the areas where I served o my mission, pre-mission?¢‚Ǩ‚Äúaged youth were called as stake missionaries. They went on splits with us regularly, learned the discussions and were able to see people become converted.

Which calling do you think would be more beneficial to a prospective missionary in helping him/her prepare for a mission?

Callings

I love hypothetical posts.

Let’s say you are the bishop of a ward. Your gospel doctrine teacher is moving at the end of the month and as a bishopric, you are deciding who to pick to replace her. All other things being equal, it’s come down to two individuals.

The first individual is a powerful orator with a vast understanding of the scriptures and gospel principles. This person has the ability to motivate people.

The second individual is a recent convert who is still absorbing much about the gospel and has yet to finish reading the Book of Mormon.

Would you put in the person who will probably make the most difference in the lives of more people, or would you put in the individual who would gain the most personally from the calling?

New Calling: Elders Quorum President

It is official. I am now the new elders quorum president of the Lethbridge First Ward. The stake presidency set us apart today.

The previous elders quorum president is moving this week and the bishop decided to put me in his place. Actually, he initially refused to give me up as ward clerk having been comfortable with how I ran things clerically. His counsellors managed to talk him into it.

I have known about it since the end of April even though the bishopric hid it from me until I was officially called by the stake presidency.

Things are different from the last time I was called as president. The quorum is smaller, I am one of the oldest in the quorum and I have learned a lot having served with a bishopric and a stake mission presidency.

I have a few ideas in mind regarding some initiatives we can implement to improve home teaching, strengthen quorum unity and grow the quorum. I meet with my counsellors this Tuesday to discuss these and we?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢ll see how receptive they are to them.

If anyone is interested, here are the callings I have had since I was married in 1995:

  • elders quorum second counsellor
  • elders quorum president
  • ward mission leader
  • stake mission secretary
  • young men president
  • ward clerk
  • elders quorum president

Nope. No ward bulletin editor.

New Calling: Ward Clerk

After two years as a counsellor in the young men presidency (and as acting young men president in our ward), I received a new calling today.

I was called as the ward clerk. The previous ward clerk lost his job and relocated to another job in a different city. He actually moved in June and the high councilman contacted and called me on Thursday. A bit long, but apparently the stake presidency and high council meet infrequently in the summer months.

Technically, I am still serving in my previous calling, as I was not released. The bishopric has a person ready to call, but were waiting to hear back from the stake regarding my call. Apparently, they didn’t have enough time to contact this individual before today to call him. As a result, I have not been released.

I hope the release will take place next Sunday, as there is a four-day Scout camp coming up next week and I would rather not having my arthritis aggravated from it. If I do go, I’ll end up limping for 3-4 days after I get back because of the arthritis, and I may not be able to bike to work. I guess we’ll see.

For the interest of anyone who cares, here is a list of the callings I?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢ve had since we’ve been married.

  • Elders quorum presidency, second counsellor (Surrey First Ward)
  • Elders quorum presidency, president (Surrey First Ward)
  • Ward mission leader (Lethbridge Ninth Ward)
  • Stake mission presidency, secretary (Lethbridge Alberta West Stake)
  • Young men presidency, second counsellor (combined Lethbridge First and Second Wards; also served as acting young men president in Lethbridge First Ward)
  • Assistant stake clerk (Lethbridge Alberta Stake)
  • Ward clerk (Lethbridge First Ward)
