The High Goal

I was reflecting this week on the different goals I have set for myself. I have a goal to have a new website done by the end of October. My wife and I have set a goal to invite some friends to take the missionary discussions by the first of the year.

But then I got called to give a blessing.

One of the fellows I Home Teach asked my companion and me to give him a blessing of comfort. He’s been having some difficult times lately and has been contemplating what direction his life should lead.

My companion acted as voice.

One thing he said really caught my attention. “And among all the goals you set for yourself, remember this: Heavenly Father should be your number one goal.”

And this statement really caused me to think about all the goals I had been setting for myself. Are they all in keeping with the High Goal? The goal to return to God, to build up His Kingdom, and to reflect His Will in our lives.

I’m still not perfect in my goal setting. I have a couple of decades of habit to get over after all. But at least now I know that making my goals require some important elements.

  1. We need to involve Our Father in our goals. Pray about them, study them, talk to Him about them. And if we feel right about them, then they are right with Him.
  2. Our goals should be such that they do not unduly take away from our callings and our responsibilities as His children and as members of his Church.
  3. Our goals should be able to forward His work and give us opportunity to strengthen and grow His Church.
  4. Though work is an eternal principle, a goal should not require us to be weary when we walk and faint when we run.

I know these four points have helped me in making new goals, and I hope they can help you in yours.
