Those are the words Ed Stelmach, Alberta’s premier said after his party won 73 of the available 83 seats.

They sure have spoken. Half of Alberta voters chose someone other than PC on their ballots.

Steady Eddie will overlook that fact, however, as he pushes through his agenda unhindered.

Southern Alberta Alternative Energy Partnership https://www.ourthoughts.ca/2006/11/06/southern-alberta-alternative-energy-partnership/ https://www.ourthoughts.ca/2006/11/06/southern-alberta-alternative-energy-partnership/#comments Mon, 06 Nov 2006 18:33:55 +0000 https://www.ourthoughts.ca/2006/11/06/890/ Despite not having much to contribute to oil and gas boom in Alberta, southern Alberta still seems intent on cashing in on the energy sector somehow. It seems Economic Development Lethbridge, SouthGrow Regional Initiative and Alberta SouthWest Regional Alliance recently joined together to attract, develop and build alternative energy projects, including wind, solar and bio-energy. The new partnership is known as the Southern Alberta Alternative Energy Partnership.

John Kolk, chair of the SAAEP Advisory Committee stated:

“A natural abundance of wind and sunshine in the region (recording nearly 2,400 hours of sunshine a year) provides the needed inputs to use the latest wind and solar technologies to generate an increase in renewable energy. Combine that with the opportunities for crop producers to benefit from ethanol production and improved waste management through bio-mass, and this region is in an excellent position to be a leader in these alternative, clean sources of fuel, electricity and thermal energy.”

Some interesting tidbits I discovered:

  • Wind producers make up approximately 25% of the tax revenue for the MD of Pincher Creek.
  • There are no bio-diesel production facilities in Alberta, despite the fact that within four years 35% of gasoline should have at least 10% ethanol.
  • Current consumption in Alberta of diesel is 5.1 billion litres annually and a 5% bio-diesel blend target for on road transportation will require approximately 255 million litres of bio-diesel.
  • Green heat technologies, including solar thermal technologies, could reduce GHG emissions by 84 MT

Unfortunately, they don’t seem to have a website.

Did you know? https://www.ourthoughts.ca/2006/06/26/did-you-know/ https://www.ourthoughts.ca/2006/06/26/did-you-know/#comments Mon, 26 Jun 2006 16:03:16 +0000 https://www.ourthoughts.ca/2006/06/26/did-you-know/

The Alberta Temple

This is a photo of the Alberta Temple that I took a few days ago while I was passing through Cardston. I didn’t give it much thought, just sort of pointed the camera in the general direction, but I think it turned out to be a pretty good photo.

Did you know, the Alberta Temple, the Hawaii Temple, and the Arizona Temple are the only Latter-Day Saint temples that do not have a gold angel Moroni statue on top?

AMA Insurance https://www.ourthoughts.ca/2006/02/24/ama-insurance/ https://www.ourthoughts.ca/2006/02/24/ama-insurance/#comments Fri, 24 Feb 2006 20:33:28 +0000 https://www.ourthoughts.ca/2006/02/24/ama-insurance/ Get this.

When we visited our lawyer to finalise our mortgage when we bought our 94-year-old house, we were told that we needed to get insurance before we took possession. Since we had a membership with AMA, we decided to go to them for house insurance.

They told us that we would need to upgrade our electrical system within a month, or they would cancel our insurance. As a result, we spent over a thousand dollars in electrical upgrades.

We found out today that AMA has decided, after the electrical upgrades were made, that they will not be providing us with insurance. They claim that there is a problem with the foundation and that there is a flood risk (despite no evidence of flooding and our property being on an incline away from the house.

Normally, I would say don’t use AMA for home insurance, but someone suggested that could be considered libelous. So, I won’t go that far.

Buying a House https://www.ourthoughts.ca/2005/10/26/buying-a-house/ https://www.ourthoughts.ca/2005/10/26/buying-a-house/#comments https://www.ourthoughts.ca/?p=277 We’re buying a house! Ten years of marriage and we’re finally buying a house.

It’s a tiny little thing at 800 sq ft. The yard is about 3500 sq ft. The house has a living room, dining room, kitchen, bathroom and two bedrooms. It also has an unfinished basement, so the potential for other rooms also exists. The garage is too small for our Windstar, but that means I will finally have a workshop.

One of the exciting things is that there is a lot of potential for improvements to the property. As well, it looks like we will be saving roughly 200 dollars on housing and utility costs with this move. This move will also mean I won’t have to transfer buses to get to work anymore.

We are very excited about this new stage in our life together.
