Glenn Beck’s Conversion Story

Thanks to a post by Mike Peterson, I came across this cool conversion story from CNN host, Glenn Beck.

  1. I enjoyed watching this. Haven’t heard of Glenn Beck before, but I’d be interested in finding out what his program is like. Do you know who was interviewing him, and for what purpose?

  2. He has a TV talk show as well as a Radio show. google him for a station near you or go to glenbeck.com

  3. Thanks for the reference to my site Kim.

Glenn’s show is quite entertaining to watch because of his style of speaking. It is also usually quite controversial. He deals mainly with current events such as immigration and the war in Iraq.

There are many other video segments from Glenn Beck’s shows on YouTube. Just do a search on their site.

  4. So pardon my lack of reverence toward Brutha Beck’s conversion, but what would qualify as an UN-cool conversion story?

Doesn’t ANY story that ends up with the people joining the church a good one from the LDS perspective?

I guess I don’t have the same reaction to this video as the rest of you. I heard about an unemployed drunk who is manipulated by his fiance into joining a church, who (once he decided to get his life together) manages to get married and find a job.

I know all these stories have to end up as faith promoting anecdotes, but in this one I see a pretty routine story of gettings one’s priorities in order adn having that pay off in the long run.

  5. what would qualify as an UN-cool conversion story?

    Mine.

I prayed. and prayed. and prayed. And prayed. And prayed. And — well, you know. Finally, A feeling told me it was right. Then that’s it. No coincidences. No miracles. Just a bunch of prayers and a feeling.

  6. I just realised that Kim’s post does not shine a favourable light on you, Sally.

It’s unfortunate that you couldn’t have been more righteous and have a child with a testimony right out of the womb, like Mary.

    :P

(Sally Disclaimer: This post does not in any way represent my actual feelings on the matter. It is enti siz tongue-in-cheek and was meant to be humourous.)

  7. Well, I can’t say I had a testimony right out of the womb. I just don’t recall ever NOT having a testimony, I seemed to always know it was true from my first memory. Even when I tried to question, I didn’t really question, I knew it, and had it confirmed. So my conversion story is kind of boring too.

  8. When I listened to this story I heard a guy with lots of problems who joined a church and a great job came along so he wants to think he is “SPECIAL” and God helped him. I did not hear anything spiritual from him.

  9. rick,

It does seem that we get all excited when we draft a new player to our team.

Can you imagine the party we’d have if you ever got drafted!

    :-)

  10. I don’t think I’m eligible for the draft … substance abuse problems and all.

    :P

  11. When I listened to this story I heard a guy with lots of problems who joined a church and a great job came along so he wants to think he is “SPECIAL” and God helped him. I did not hear anything spiritual from him.

The above was George’s response. The truth of the testimony of all of all of the Prophets of the Old and new Testament has to do with this very point. Without the Spirit (The Holy Ghost) testifying, Spirit to Spirit, the natural man cannot learn of the truth of this or any other principle revealed.

  12. Glen Beck has the unique ability to talk to the world about values embraced by the LDS without sounding preachy and with absolute conviction. His language is sufficiently sprinkled with worldly words that he doesn’t come across as”better than thou” or preachyl, yet not only makes his point but makes it convincingly.
The week following general conference he essentially made the points that Gordon B. Hinckley had made in the Priesthood session Saturday evening and the world listened. They wouldn’t have listened to general conference but his passion and manner of delivery reached out beyond the confines of the conference center. Needless to say I am a devoted fan.

  13. Any honest person has to respect a man who is “real” enought to talk to God and do what is asked.I was moved by the sincerity and honesty shared by Glenn. Maybe we should all rid ourselves of pre-conceived bigotry towards Mormons and listen with a open mind and heart.

  14. I stand in awe at the statement “a man who is “real” enought [sic] to talk to God and do what is asked”.

Have you ever considered that this statement is ‘pre-conceived bigotry’ toward those who do not believe in an Abrahmic god?

  15. I think it is wonderful that Glen Beck found something which gives him a higher power to believe in.

If the Abrahmic God is the God of the whole earth, include everyone and if so, then would all mankind who prayed to any God really being praying to the Abrahmic God?

  16. then would all mankind who prayed to any God really being praying to the Abrahmic God

This is the ultimate arrogance of the Christian.

Reflect on how offensive it would be if someone assumed your beliefs meant nothing, because they knew that their god was the god of all the Earth…and told you so.

Would you think it were equally wonderful if he found a faith in a Sun-orbiting teapot – as long as it is his belief that the teapot has super-powers?

    I would wager no.

  17. Would you think it were equally wonderful if he found a faith in a Sun-orbiting teapot – as long as it is his belief that the teapot has super-powers?

Only if it’s herbal tea in the pot.

  18. I enjoyed watching this. Haven’t heard of Glenn Beck before, but I’d be interested in finding out what his program is like. Do you know who was interviewing him, and for what purpose?

I believe it is an outtake excerpt from an interview done by KTVX channel 4 in Salt Lake City. I think it was done in early/mid 2006

  19. This is for JM. No I would not think it was wonderful if someone found slavation in a sun orbiting tea pot. But as the story was told Glen found salvation in God. For all of you who laugh and make fun of us who know Jesus all we can say is God bless you.

  20. Why is it every time I am in a ‘heated’ discussion and a Christian says “God Bless You” it feels like they’d just as soon be saying “F___ You”?

It’s certainly used in the same way.

  21. I’m sorry but Glenn Beck should not be on CNN. CNN is a news channel. And as such should be objective. I’ve watched Glenn Beck many a times and every time, I never manage to finish watching it to the end. I feel gross, like I’ve been fondled by an old man. I ask myself: “who the hell is watching this?!” Glenn Beck is the definition of pro Bush propagenda.
He’s pro war, pro Bush, pro republican, he believes Global Warming is a natural phonomenon and as such we are worrying for nothing. He’s appauling to listen to! I don’t have a problem with his opinion per say. What I have a problem with is that he leaves no room for the flipside, or if he ever does, he quickly ridicules it.
I just hope that people watching it don’t take him seriously.

  22. Kreg, most of what you said about glen is true. He is pro bush, pro republican, his stand on global warming, the midle east and a lot more. You failed to mention the other media, and their lack of total coverage regarding several of the topics that I have just mentioned. However, when it comes to the coverage of the killings at V.T. by a nut case, all you get is pictures of this demon over and over again on all the net works. Does the media take in to account the feelings of the families and friends that just had a close person killed. This nut’s picture is everywhere. No, the media has no respect for the families and frinds, they care only about ratings. I have not seen glen’s show on this subject, but I do believe that he will not take the same stand and show all the pictures that we have seen enoutght of already. You might want to watch the entire show this time

  23. rick said: Why is it every time I am in a ‘heated’ discussion and a Christian says “God Bless You” it feels like they’d just as soon be saying “F___ You”?

It’s certainly used in the same way.

I realize this is an old post however I just read it and I would say that based on a lot of life success seminars I have attended that the reason it sounds like that to you is that you “choose” to hear it that way.
In most cases, (admittedly not all) yet in most cases they simply do not want to argue, they do not agree with you, and respect that you have a right to your opinion and “may God bless you even though we don’t agree”. It is supposed to be a caring respectful comment. If they mean it different that is something they should probably look at. If you take it different that might be an issue you want to look at.

Just to clarify my statement, I mean nothing rude or derogatory by this explanation. It is simply the view and opinion by the writer and should in no way offend the reader. This disclaimer is for those that are easily offended or make up what they want something to mean.

Have a nice day and “God Bless You” :)

  24. Perception is reality.

If in their communications with me, I am taking it in the way described in #26 then that is the way it was meant. If not, they should clarify.

It’s a thought terminating statement regardless.

  25. Glen: I can’t believe in the mighty USA that a person can have 2 impaired driving charges and possesion of cocain and your justice system gives them a day. WOW! In Alberta Canada blow over .08 and you loose your drivers licence for 6 mo. from the courts then the provincial govt. takes it away for another 6 mo. You have to take a 1 day course and write an exam to get it back at the end of the year. Your insurance goes up big time for 5 years. The second time is 3 mo. jail time and 2 or more years no licence. Throw in some coke and you’ll be in jail for a lot longer. I guess the judicial system in California really dosen’t care if you are drunk and driving, do they give cash awards if you kill somebody while you’re impaired? Is this really the same sentence for the ordinary folks or is it only for the ones with cash? Thanks! Gary in Edmonton, Alberta Canada

  26. 100.00 dollars. When you said 100.00 dollars a barrel of oil and $4 a gallon of gas by the summer, well yeah, of course Bush won’t be the president any more. Probably most of his cronies will be gone. too. Collect as much money as they can. Well, I could be all wrong, but it’s a thought. Ow, another thought. Collect as much as they can before we all start using ethanol as well. Gee, I wonder why we haven’t been using ethanol. Dragsters have been using it since around 1940. Something to think about. Did you know anyone could make gas with drain oil. Yeah, 68 octane; the combustible engine will run on that .

  27. I don’t know, Paul, why aren’t we all using ethanol? Could it be because producing it is more expensive than producing gasoline, because we use petroleum to produce it, because vehicles that use it get lower mileage? Could it be because it doesn’t make us any less dependent on oil? Of course, you could also take notice of the fact that nearly all the gasoline sold in the US already contains ethanol–in other words we DO use it.

  28. I think you need to understand what you’re saying because I’m not stupid. I know we are using ethanol. We need to use more. 50/50 would be nice. That would be almost half are glutenisum on oil. Just think about it.

I just heard on the news that the government wants car and trucks to get at least 55 miles to the gallon by 2030. Yeah right. They’re not thinking of using any other kind of fuel but gasoline because all your oil stock holders are not going to allow it. Look, this is what we need to do to send the price of oil to the bottom. If half the people in just one state didn’t get gas for one day, that would a hit to the oil industry. Then that news would get out and other states would follow. But what the hell do I know? I do know that paying 97 dollars for a barrel of oil is annihilating the poor and starving children.

    Paul

  29. “If half the people in just one state didn’t get gas for one day, that would a hit to the oil industry.”

    Wrong.
Offsetting the purchase of a commodity for a day will do nothing to impact its’ price.
You’re going to buy it tomorrow anyway.

  30. Beck,

On 12-05-07 you wanted a Frankenstein President, well lets go for it, you and I.

    1. close the borders
    2. end our two wars
    3. get rid of all foreigners who do not hold green cards
    4. protect all Americans
    5. less government
    6. cut our dependence on foreign oil
    7. cut our trades with China and all trades that are consuming American jobs.
    8. pro choice for women
    9. protect our guns
    10. lower taxes
    11. less government spending

Beck, I am all American who wants to protect this country’s freedoms by the constitution and the love and the god we trust as Americans.

P.S. You tell me how a working class man can run for president, and I’ll show you a true American who will work for every American. Illegals will run with their tails up their asses, so all you illegals let this sick twisted freak (Beck) give this sick twisted American(CLYDE) the answer. Good job on your book.

  31. Does Clyde think Glenn Beck is somehow involved in this thread? Why address a post to him here?

  32. I would like a direct e mail to Glenn beck. If Beck wants to take this country back to the people I would like to talk to him.

This election in 2008 needs a person that can make decisions and keep this country moving and working together.

Now get Glenn and let’s take America back to the people, let’s close the borders, end the wars with victory, decrees our dependency on foreign oil and make America proud.

  33. “end the wars with victory”

I recall a banner saying that the mission was accomplished well over a year ago… hmmm… perhaps I was mistaken.
